Characteristics of the Boraginaceae (Nelson, 1992)

5-lobed, symmetrical corollas with 5 stamens attached to the corolla tube alternating with the petals.  Flowers usually white, blue or yellow.  Flowers generally have a short, inconspicuous tube with 5 spreading, rounded lobes and little crests at the throat.  Ovary superior.  Fruit consists of 4 separate seeds of nutlets.  Branches of the inflorescence are often scorpioid (coiled to one side).
