Characteristics of the Polemoniaceae (Pesman, 1992):

Dicot.  Showy regular flowers with united 5-parted calyx and corolla, the latter saucer-shaped, bell-shaped or with a slender tube and abruptly flared outer portion.  Corolla lobes appear twisted in the bud.  Stamens usually 5, attached inside the corolla tube.  Most are annual or perennial herbaceous plants with alternate or opposite leaves, simple or compound.
