Characteristics of the Rosaceae (Pesman, 1992):

Dicot.  Flowers regular with a cup-shaped hypanthium (disk on the rim of which the sepals, petals and stamens are attached).  Sepals 5, sometimes 4, patly united.  Petals 5, separate.  Stames 5 to many.  Pistils 1 to many, separate or united into a 2- to 5-parted compound pistil.  Alternate leaves, simple or compound, usually toothed at the outer margin.  Herbaceous plants, shrubs or trees.
