Characteristics of the Scrophulariaceae (Pesman, 1992):

Dicot.  Flowers with irregular, 2-lipped corollas, lips usually lobed.  Stames 2, 4, or 5 with one not bearing pollen.  In the large genus,  Penstemon, the fifth stamen is bearded at the tip ("beard tongue).  Annual or perennial herbaceous plants with opposite leaves.
